Web 2.0

What is Web 2.0?

Varya Mathreja

In these trying times of disease and disaster, Mobile web 2.0 has been an enriching experience for consumers all around the world. Improving overall connectivity among people all around the globe and making the transmission of data easier and efficient than ever.

O’Reilly (2012)6 says, “Network effects from user contributions are the key to market dominance in the web 2.0 era.”

This line directly connects to the mobility report by Google Inc. about people flocking parks and just generally returning to the outdoor world as the increase in the statistics is not immediate but gradual as the only way people were connected for the past pandemic-spent year was through social media. Bloggers and social media enthusiasts would obviously not forget to post in such exciting times when the world seemed to get back to normal again and viewing these stories added on to others visiting the parks themselves. Eventually a hike in the amount of people visiting parks and recreational spots was reported by Google’s geolocation software which collects real-time data through google maps and other similar applications (also a part of web 2.0). With the apparent thrill of coming out of the house, risk and therefore responsibility are also at stake. Web 2.0 helps people look out for each other too with regular social media updates on Covid-19 guidelines differing from place to place depending on real-time location updates posted by people all around for their fellow peers to stay well-informed and protected. This resulted in a decline in the rate of people using the transit stations as they could lead to spread of disease considering the required physical contact and crowding to access these stations.

However, Web 2.0 allows easy access to he internet for everyone, which means that there isn’t a license required to browse the internet, and when you let everyone in on something, a few bugs are sure to emerge. This is where online fraud, embezzlement, data theft, and hackers come in. Here are a few ill effects of Web 2.0 :

  1. An overload of information on the web due to various data dumps created by several unwanted posts and shares on groups, communities, threads and other platforms.
  2. Freedom to post and comment, due to which derogatory coments towards people and even companies are very cmmon. For every high school bully there is, there are a hundred on the internet.
  3. Too many fake Ids and scammers.

Web 2.0 platforms technically allow millions of individuals to publish material, and bad users are always attempting to post malware on these sites. The quantity of personal information that people publish on social networking sites poses a societal hazard which is why data security and cyber security is as important as the security of your cozy home.
